monsieur guillaume berroyer — the infamous ark — recently underwent a sort of sea change in both his artistic and personal life. anyone following his career with even a passing interest knows of his long resume (collabs with pepe bradock and cabanne, dolibox, mika weill, releases on brif, karat, circus company, perlon…) and has heard tales of the studio fire and the creative energy shift and all of the stories associated with his frenzied live performances and dj gigs. great stories are fun and build mystique, but as most heads know the music more than measures up to the legend. his recent >arkpocalypse now< full-length showed a matured craftsman that is not so much waxing introspective as he is distilling his signature sound into something manageable enough to truly adapt to all of his musical tastes.

the locke saints band out of watts, california created deep jazz mixed with soul & heavy funk. similar to the kashmere stage band albums, young talent is highlighted under direction of veteran producer reggie andrews.the 1978-79 locke saints album is considered the holy grail of school-funk albums, the original pressing fetching upwards of $1000 on auction. a heavy dose of school band funk!limited 500 copy pressing.

beg to differ is a dance music duo comprised of house hero nick chacona and wurst label boss roy dank. the two longtime friends started tinkering around in the studio last year, remixing the likes of detachments for thisisnotanxit as well as nicks solo outing with kathy diamond for moodmusic, and quickly finding favor with fellow new yorkers james murphy and holy ghost!. influenced by talking heads, my bloody valentine, and paulsimpson, beg to differs work is characterized by big hooks, live instrumentation, and lush production. the duos wurst debut features two massive - and decidedly different - reworks. parisian afrobeat masters bibi tanga & the selenites get the full beg to differ overhaul on >be africa<, complete with infectious arpeggios, killer keys, and an entirely new rhythm section, with nick himself on bass duties. the pop rock of the hours >ali in the jungle< is transformed into an epic, string-laden anthem taking in disco, rock, and even trance by the end of the mix. heavy to say the very least.

badmotorfinger got lost amid the blockbuster success of nevermind and ten (all were released around the same time). but the fact is that, though they re all great records, badmotorfinger is much less accessible by comparison. not that it isnt melodic, but it also sounds twisted and gnarled, full of dissonant riffing, impossible time signatures, howling textural solos, and weird, droning tonalities. its surprisingly cerebral and arty music for a band courting mainstream metal audiences, but it attacks with scientific precision. part of that is due to the presence of new bassist ben shepherd, who gives the band its thickest rhythmic foundation yet and, moreover, immediately shoulders the departed hiro yamamotos share of songwriting duties. but its apparent that the whole band has greatly expanded the scope of its ambitions. and badmotorfinger fulfills them, pulling all the different threads of the bands sound together into a mature, confident, well written record. this is heavy, challenging hard rock full of intellectual sensibility and complex band interplay.

beautiful disco masterpiece, the self-titled >zig zag< lp. originally released on the tiny canadian label pacha records, this lost gem has become one of the true holy grails of the cosmic disco scene and holds the top spot in many a wants list. this incredible record is every bit as good as you ve heard it is, with every track a killer. all feature great playing, awesome funky synths and b-lines and wonderful afro french vocals that make for one of the best disco lps of all time and a record that for once warrants the high prices paid for it in internet auctions. top class!
